These are the best of my black and white pieces. I’ve been working with Victorian engravings for about 10 years now. Just as with the colour pieces I started out making paper-on-paper collages initially but now I usually collage directly onto painted canvas. I love the way it’s possible to achieve near-seamless image grafting with this type of image, and that makes for some really powerful work.
For my latest 20 pieces, see the New Work gallery.
I haven’t set up a shop yet so please contact me if you are interested in purchasing a piece. Canvas pieces are sealed and ready to hang. Paper works are unframed. Prices start from NZ$75.

This was my one of my entries for a competition for a commission to create a mural on a large metal box owned by the phone company. Unfortunately it was not a winning entry but I'm still proud of the piece.
'When the stars are right, R'lyeh will rise from the sea, never to sink again, and Cthulhu will awaken and revel across the world, ravening for delight.'
'The Path' is a quasi-mystical series of collages exploring the journey from Ignorance and Chaos to Wisdom and Enlightenment. It's also an exercise in making things seem more important by capitalising them.
Part 1: Chaos. A hellish landscape of Fear and Ignorance and nasty-natured sentient Toys.

Part 2: Meditation. The patient and devoted student, given the proper application of Time, is rewarded with pearls of Wisdom and the ability to shun frippery and distraction in the quest for pure Knowledge.

Part 3: Inspiration. We learn and take Inspiration from those who have Ascended before us, transparent Beings Of Light whose Love and Power shine down upon all Creatures.

Part 4: Revelation. It is a wise ruler indeed who understands the difference between Magic and Madness. Only then shall The Secrets be revealed to him.

Part 5: Enlightenment. Freed by a divine Hand, the Enlightened Mind soars above self-imposed prisons of Restriction and Baseness; free to ride the currents of Time and Wonder.
An early example of my work on "liquid painted" canvas. I was able to achieve much more vivid colour with practice, but I think the more subdued colours work well for this piece.

I think I always judged this piece harshly because the symmetry is off and symmetry is important to me, but I've [very] recently seen it in a new light and now I appreciate it a lot more.

One of the first pieces I created on painted canvas. Apart from the trickiness of sticking down those damn flowers - which were on very thin paper - it was a very successful piece and sold quickly when exhibited.

Here we see a group of artists working feverishly to make the most of good ideas pouring out of the aether, or wherever it is that ideas come from.

Pop-psychology-mumbo-jumbo with animals representing aspects of a man's mind / personality eg. a horse running free, a spiny lizard that others can't get close to, a timid mouse, a restless wolf, a contented cow etc.
If you asked me what my very best piece was, this is the one I would choose every time. The clock-faced man has become my mascot, I even have him tattooed on my chest.
NOT FOR SALE
Eat your heart out Peter Jackson. In fact this was inspired by a "mockumentary" that he made called 'Forgotten Silver', about a pioneering filmmaker struggling to create an epic film in 19th century New Zealand.

I really enjoy the way the colourful background and the monotone foreground enhance one another while still standing apart. I was very proud to have this image grace the cover of .
I'm not sure what it is exactly that I love so much about this piece, but it's always been one of my favourites. I may be alone in holding it in such high esteem though - I've shown it at least 3 times and no-one has shown any interest in buying it.
One of my favourite black and white pieces, I'm particularly proud of the jellyfish creature and his timid pet - they work so well together it's as if the picture was intended to be that way, not as if it was collaged together from disparate sources.
Part of a series of collages I created using old photos of the city of Dunedin, shortly after I moved here in 2003. This one is my favourite. It now resides in California in the collection of a talented artist who traded her work for mine.
