In this article, we will delve into the fascinating world of illustration’s diverse styles and trends.

Pop Art: The Art of Mass Culture

Pop art originated in the 1950s and was an expression of consumer culture and mass media. Bright colors, clear outlines, and the use of everyday objects make this style incredibly relatable. Pop art often comments on social phenomena and standards.

Abstraction: In Search of Harmony

Abstract illustration is a journey into a world of shapes, colors, and textures. The relative freedom to form images allows artists to express emotions and concepts by addressing the viewer through abstract elements.

Realism: The Art of Detail

Surrealism: Reflections of the subconscious mind

Surrealist illustrations explore the world of dreams, fantasies, and the subconscious mind. This style is often thought-provoking and brings an element of mystery to works.

To make the work expressive and effective, it is necessary to adhere to the principles of composition. The key techniques of collages are the presence of contrasting fragments and highlighting the central element of the work. There are such variants of compositions:

  1. elements are arranged diagonally. It is better that the line went from the lower left corner to the upper right. In the empty corners you can place less important fragments. The photo shows – Basics of collage for beginners: styles, choice of background and secrets of compositions, Fig. Diagonal composition
  2. “Golden Ratio. In any picture there are some points to which a person immediately draws attention. They are called visual centers. In a finished work, there should be four such centers. The principle is as follows: the ratio of the smaller part of the composition to the larger should correspond to the ratio of the larger part to the whole picture.
  3. Horizon line. The closer the element is to the horizon line, the smaller it is. And vice versa, the farther away it is, the larger it is.
  4. “Pyramid.” The point of the composition should be at the top to make the work more expressive. A wide bottom gives the collage softness and poise.
  5. “Dominant.” In the picture there is a main element, to which all the other fragments are subordinated. The photo shows – The basics of collage for beginners: styles, choice of background and secrets of compositions, Fig. Composition with dominance
  6. “Unity”. Lack of dominant in the picture.
  7. Asymmetry. Elements do not obey the horizon line, they are arranged chaotically. The photo shows – Basics of collage for beginners: styles, choice of background and secrets of compositions, Fig. Asymmetrical composition
  8. Symmetry. Elements are arranged in pairs and in balance. Such collages look less bright and flashy. Rules are created to break them.

Therefore, it is not necessary to adhere to any particular principle in the work. Experiment and fantasize, so that your picture turned out to be truly extraordinary.

If you decide to make a collage for the first time, it is better to stick to some rules and recommendations. With experience, you will bring them to automatism. When you lack inspiration and the muse does not come, create a composition step by step: draw a sketch; choose a suitable collage style; make a background, or better yet, several options to choose the most successful one; fill the background with elements.

TIP: Work with different materials, but do not overdo it, so that the work does not look too motley. The color of the background should not draw attention to itself, its purpose – to complement the composition, make it harmonious.

The main materials for collages:

  • any paper;
  • newspaper and magazine clippings;
  • photos and postcards;
  • fabric scraps;
  • threads and buttons;
  • foil;
  • colorful pebbles;
  • oilcloth;
  • gift wrapping, etc.

A special role in creating a collage is played by glue. Depending on the chosen materials, different types of glue are used. For example, wallpaper glue firmly fixes the paper and dried leaves. Sold florist glue, which provides a quick gluing of transparent elements. PVA is very popular, it does not deform the material and provides a reliable bond. Also use: glue pencil, double-sided and paper tape or sew collage elements with threads.

Speaking of collages, it is worth mentioning scrapbooking, because it is based on the same principles. The essence of scrapbooking is the creation of unique photo albums, postcards, boxes, notebooks, etc. The technique uses colored paper, multicolored fabric, lace, wooden or plastic elements, ribbons, twigs, dried flowers, stickers, accessories.

Placing elements on the base, adhere to the compositional principles of collage art. The plus side of both techniques is their simplicity. Even a beginner will be able to make an original and unique product, you just need to want to, put a little effort and add a little imagination!
